Different ages, different beginnings, the same reason. Meet the women who once came to a trial training — and never left.
I came with no experience. Today I can't imagine a week without my teammates.
I thought sport had passed me by. At my first training I didn't even know how to hold the ball — and the team welcomed me as if I'd always been there. Two years on, rugby league gave me back a confidence I didn't know I was missing.
“I was looking for a community and found sisters. Rugby league changed both my body and my confidence.”
Work was draining me and I had no circle of people outside the office. Now the team is my second home.
“You come to one training out of curiosity and stay for the team.”
I thought sport was behind me. The coaches guided me step by step, without a single judgmental look.
“For the first time in my life I feel indestructible. The pitch is the only place where I'm completely myself.”
As a teenager I was shy. Rugby league gave me a voice — on the pitch and off it.
At 16 I thought sport wasn't for me. Now I coach girls younger than me.
School signed me up for a trial training almost by chance. Three years later I'm still here, helping new girls get over the same fear I had on my first day.
